The new Google browser
Just when you thought the battle between Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox was tightening up, a new surprise contender from Google may change the course of the Web-browser wars. Whether it's IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari, or an alternative client like Avant, the Web browser is the software of the Internet, and Google threw its sumo-sized hat into the ring Tuesday.
Google Chrome is a brand-new browser from the search-engine giant. The software is built on the same Webkit rendering engine as Apple's Safari browser, but Google has taken its own path with Chrome, opting for a stripped-down look that doesn't interfere with browsing and adds several unique features such as draggable downloads, a private-browsing mode, and a new JavaScript engine built from the ground up.
CNET editors have been all over Google Chrome since the comic-book preview was sent out this holiday weekend, and they have tons of coverage of today's launch. Read more about Google's big plans for the new Web browser--or better yet, try it out yourself and tell us what you think.
